Total Hip Arthroplasty
Total Hip Arthroplasty

Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) is the replacement of a degenerative hip joint with a polyethylene acetabular cup and cobalt chromium femoral prosthesis. THA is most commonly used in mature patients over 45 pounds of body weight when conservative therapy is no longer effective and the owners desires optimum functional performance from the animal.

THA radiographA candidate for THA should be free of concurrent neurologic or orthopedic diseases, and should not have a history of chronic infections, i.e. otitis, cystitis or dermatitis. The success rate is approximately 93% when patients meet the screening criteria.

Dr. Barstad and Dr. Bertrand perform the procedure at the DVSC Dallas office and have 32 combined years of experience with cemented total hip systems. We are currently using the BioMedtrix modular system that allows for greater adaptability. THA radiographIf you have a hip dysplasia patient that is no longer responding to medical management, is too old for a TPO and is too large and active for an FHO, please consider a THA. The initial consultation to discuss the procedure and evaluate your client's pet may be scheduled with any of our surgeons.
