Total
Ear Canal Ablation (TECA)
The
primary indication is for treatment of otitis externa/media in dogs
and cats. At the DVSC, we always perform a lateral bulla osteotomy
in conjunction with the TECA. This allows for examination and cleaning
of the middle ear compartment, thereby preventing the development
of fistulous tract formation postoperatively.
Numerous
clients have commented that removal of the diseased vertical and
horizontal ear canals greatly improves the patient's quality of
life. The need for topical medications is eliminated, and the patient's
discomfort is alleviated. Some pet owners have stated that their
pets have "acted like a puppy again" following the procedure.
Studies
have shown that tumors found within the ear canal are usually best
treated with a TECA. This provides the best opportunity for curing
the patient of the tumor, and minimizes the risk of leaving neoplastic
cells in the surgical field. Localized excision of aggressive tumors,
such as ceruminous gland adenocarcinomas, and squamous cell carcinomas
often result in tumor regrowth.
